ROCK band REM - one of Georgia’s most prolific exports - will perform at Lancashire County Cricket Club this Bank Holiday for the third time in five years and, if the impressive line up is anything to go by, it promises to be a mighty extravaganza.
Led by talented frontman Michael Stipe, he of the haunting voice, the three-piece band are considered by many to be one of the most popular alternative acts of all time.
From debut release, ‘Murmur’, the American band have grown and grown in popularity since their formation in 1980 and achieved worldwide success in 1991 and 1992 for their 'Out of Time' and 'Automatic for the People' albums.
The Old Trafford ground will be privy to the veteran rockers this Sunday, August 24, on the eve of releasing hotly anticipated new album ‘Accelerate’.
Last year the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and quite rightly so as their impressive discography testifies.
REM will be supported by the crowd pleasing Editors and the Guillemots who, having both spent this summer doing the festival rounds, should be au fait with the clamouring hordes of fans this truly special event will bring.
At any rate this should be a day of reckoning for REM as they experiment with sounds from their new oeuvre.
The scheduled running order is as follows with timings subject to change: Guillemots: 5.45 to 6.30pm Editors: 7 to 8pm REM: 8.30 to 10.30pm

A few days ago I went on the hunt for a sugar plantation, with Sue, a retired nurse from Britain who is over in Malawi doing six months’ voluntary work. She is based several hours’ north of us, in Salima, helping local nurses caring for and visiting people who are dying. At home Sue buys all her sugar from the charity Traidcraft – so we were looking for the co-operative who their white sugar.
