THE accompanying CCTV footage captured an assault on the platform of Altrincham Metrolink station.
Two 17-year-old boys were standing on the Manchester-bound platform when they were approached by two men who engaged them in conversation.
During the course of the conversation a small number of people joined the group and were standing talking with the two men.
While they were talking a tram pulled up at the platform and one of the victims was pushed backwards onto the tram and punched in the face.
Both victims were then followed onto the tram by two of the men and a scuffle broke out, during which both victims were punched in the face.
The men and the rest of the group then walked off. The victims suffered minor bruising in the incident but were otherwise unhurt.
PC Anthony Stanley of Altrincham Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: "This must have been a deeply unpleasant few minutes for the victims.
"They were minding their own business waiting for a tram but quickly found themselves practically surrounded by a group of people, some of which assaulted them.
"We now need help tracing members of that group. If anyone recognises them following the incident, which took place at about 1am on September 28, then please call the Altrincham NPT on 0161 856 7527 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
