FLIXTON suffered a disappointing start to the Vodkate League Premier Division season as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Glossop North End.

Both teams tried to make a quick start but the difficult conditions made it hard for either side to play football.

The game settled down into a midfield battle with neither side on top and no chances were created in the opening half hour.

Glossop should have opened the scoring when a corner was floated in from the left. Rick Whelan found himself unmarked but put his header over the bar when it was easier to score.

But he made up for his miss a minute later.

Flixton decided to go short to clear their lines and were caught out. Glossop took full advantage and Flixton keeper Andy Moore failed to hold a cross, allowing Whelan to blast home.

This unsettled Flixton and they were unable to establish any pattern in their play.

They did, however, start to get on top at the start of the second half.

Glossop keeper Andy Gotham spilled the ball from a Chris Downey shot but the hosts couldn’t take advantage.

Flixton continued to press forward in search of an equaliser though and made three substitutions in quick succession in a bid to change their shape.

Throughout the final half hour, Flixton peppered their opponents’ goal with shots but the Glossop defence held firm.

The best chance fell to Downey, who took a free kick on the edge of the box and curled the ball round the wall but just wide of the post as Gotham scrambled across his goal.

Had it been a boxing match, the referee would have stopped the contest but eventually Flixton were left with nothing when the least they deserved was a point.

On Saturday Flixton travel to Abbey Hey in an FA Cup tie, kicking off at 3pm. On Wednesday August 20 they play Abbey Hey at Valley Road in either an FA Cup replay or a league fixture.
