AFTER reading the letters in SAM concerning the shambles of a Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in Sale, I would like to support the writers in all they have said.

I HAVE never written in before – but I find myself compelled to write regarding the debacle which is the proposed congestion charge for Manchester.

I CANNOT see what Sale has to benefit from having the congestion charge. The Sale Water Park is of major concern as it seems that half of this nature reserve is to be turned into a car park. Anyone using this junction to get onto the M60 in the morning knows how slow the traffic it is already. I can believe adding a huge car park will make it any easier for Sale residents to leave and enter Sale at this junction. Another point is that in London the congestion charge doesn’t make much revenue from charging. They make it from the revenue from the £100 penalty charge. Having lived in London for many years before living in Sale I can testify how easy it is to be caught out and end up paying penalties for straying into the zone at the wrong time. I was for the congestion charge in London, but Manchester is a different place and I can’t believe that there are any benefits worth paying this extra tax for.

MAY I take this opportunity of thanking all the people of Sale who attended the Rememberance Sunday service. It was fantastic to see so many young people there.

PLEASE, please, please could somebody help little Jack Astall, whose mother Lee-Anne Brown was murdered last month? On reading your interview with his great grandma Jean Davis, I was so saddened, but not surprised, to learn that he is having nightmares and that Jean believes he should have therapy.

THE sale of the open, green and public space at Barrington Road, primarily for a 15 space car park for a new office block is unnecessary, as the developer already has recent planning permission for the same office block with 21 space car park to the rear on land they already own.

A few days ago I went on the hunt for a sugar plantation, with Sue, a retired nurse from Britain who is over in Malawi doing six months’ voluntary work. She is based several hours’ north of us, in Salima, helping local nurses caring for and visiting people who are dying. At home Sue buys all her sugar from the charity Traidcraft – so we were looking for the co-operative who their white sugar.
